Every individual will have disputes among family members at home. You will feel hurt or miserable even when your relatives commented on your disputes without putting it on the internet. Not to mention, how would you feel when the public judge or give opinions on your family affairs?

The concerns of sharing family affairs on social media:

  1. Right to privacy
Home is a safe and private place for you to discuss family matters, whereby certain thoughts and expressions could be given a negative label. However, the trust between family members may be broken when you share the matter to the public because the privacy rights has been violated. This means personal information about you should be kept securely and not shared without your permission.

  2. Loss of trust
Violations of privacy would eventually place firms in a downward trust among family members. Lack of trust can be a huge issue for any family moving forward, especially when problem arises. Hence, mistrust within a family can hinder the functionality of the relationships.

  3. Lack of freedom of speech at home
Every individual has the right to freedom of expression. In a family unit, some may feel they are not forbidden to say what they like or what they don’t like because home is considered a safe space for them. It is a space, where family members can articulate their opinions without fear.

  4. Psychological issues
Mistrust and poor relationships would signify serious psychological problems, such as stress and depression because there is a lack of family harmony and peace. Let alone stress from family members, public opinions will add another burden to the victim. Emotional control can be considered as the most damaging weapon that impacts families when there is a conflict.

Why do people want to share family affairs on the social media?

  • To get support and affirmation of values, such as self-worth.
According to research, a high self-worth person is likely to get assurance from others, whereas low self-worth person will think that they are not being respected or seen by others.

  • To seek others' attention and desire.
Some people have the desire and eagerness to to have such a halo like celebrity. One feeling for a halo may not be too big but more of an emotional satisfaction.

  • To expand social circles.
Some people may have a small circle of friends with less emotional attachment. We are all human after all, we want to have someone to depend on. Hence, they will use social media as a source to search for the discrepancies.

  • Lost of focus in life.
Some people may often find ways and ideas to post on social media to get attention and fulfil their emotional satisfaction despite having a full time job. It could be any scenarios and not just family affairs, such as what happened in the bus, ate something that is not tasty, etc.

Matters to be considered before posting on social media:

Individuals shall look into and consider below questions before sharing it on social media;

  1. Mental Health
    Does it have psychological burden?

  2. Life Growth
Does it help you or other family member grow and develop better?

Family affairs shall keep confidential and uses the right solution to solve a conflict, such as self-examination through communication. Open and continuous communication among family members allows them to find balance as well as creates an atmosphere to express love for one another. Prior to communication, it is best to self-reflect first, which is much better than public trial because then you will rely on the opinions of others to live. Gradually, you will encounter low self-worth, lack of personal values, lack of problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Hence, individual shall self-reflect (i.e., verbal or non-verbal), analyse the problem (i.e., think in different perspectives) before posting it on social media. The social media posts can include your reflection and the solution, which is more meaningful and insightful for others.

Organise and analyse problem → Solve problem → Share on social media
