Build Your Resilience
Author: Donald Robertson

We all have our blue days from time to time. Sometimes, we are able to bounce back fairly quickly; sometimes, we take longer time to stand back up; and sometimes, we drop down to the bottom…

Exhibiting resilience does not mean eliminating anxiety and other forms of distress. Resilient people too, experience strong emotions but they are able to cope well and overcome with the stressful problems. For example, people with resilience will bereaved and feel extreme sadness, but they are able to adapt well over time and avoid developing into serious depression.

There are four main types of challenge that require resilience, such as overcoming childhood problems, living with daily hassles, recovering from setbacks and reaching out for greater meaning and purpose. During stressful situations, social support, right attitude, appropriate skill, good self-esteem, self-confidence, emotion regulation, and proper problem solving skill will help act as proactive factors to build our resilience.

The book described various methods to building our resilience. For example,

  1. Mindfulness & Present Moment – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
It suggests that being aware of the self as an observer of the present moment makes it easier to be aware of the connection between actions and personal values.
  2. Progressive Relaxation
PR emphasizes developing awareness of bodily sensations during tension and relaxation, focusing on the present moment, and willingly accepting any resulting experiences.
  3. Differential Relaxation
DR challenges us to make relaxation skills more generalized and long-standing. Thus, we are able to cope with sudden adversity in life.
  4. Problem Solving Attitude
To solve difficult or challenging problems, it is essential to adopt a favourable attitude or mind-set throughout the process. A positive attitude towards facing the problem and solving the problem will make one more resilient!!
