Rebellion is part of the necessary development into adulthood. During the rebellious stage, children often challenge adult authority in the pursuit of more independence.
The 3 Rebellious Stages:
1. Development of Self-Awareness (1-3 years old)
At this stage, children are typically enjoy in trying to say “No”, yet unable to differentiate their needs. Sometimes, “no” is used simply to see the adult’s reactions.
2. The Little “Grown-up” (7-9 years old)
Children often challenge adults’ authority to make their own decisions. They may start to use some “tricks” to achieve what they want.
3. Puberty (12-18 years old)
The period for youths to understand their place in society and establish self-identity.
Good communication is an important parenting skill and the key to build mutual respect between parents and children. With the golden rule of parents-children communication, the contents should be based on the ratio of 80% of building relationships and 20% of reasoning with the children. Children are more capable to listen and accept the values when they feel connected with their parents. Besides, parents are a child’s first teachers and role models. For instance, parents may create house rules that are applicable for both parties. By displaying moral and ethical behaviors, parents are building a stronger platform for the children to adopt the positive values and behaviors.
