"How to get children to listen?" is one of the most frequently asked questions from parents. However, listening to your children makes it more likely that they listen to you. It helps parents and children form stronger bonds and relationships.

"Parents as Role Models"

Parents are a child’s first teachers and role models. For instance, parents may create house rules that are applicable for both parties. By displaying moral and ethical behaviors, the children are more likely to adopt the positive values and behaviors.

Avoid saying "no“ or ”don't" all of the time, such as “Don’t be noisy!” In fact, positive words help to encourage positive behaviors. For instance, "Can you take a break and read a book by sitting down?"

Q1: My child (2 years old) often whines and cries, what should I do?

Children are typically enjoy in trying to say “no”. For instance, the child refuses to drink milk. Parents may let the child wait for 15-30 minutes and take away the bottle. If the child cries, parents shall insist to wait together with the child and help him to understand the consequences.

Currently, the child is expressing his curiosity and developing his self-awareness. Parents may provide support by creating a limited but intriguing environment to explore together with the child and guide him to keep at the end.

Q3: The elder child (5 years old) often disturbs when the younger brother is asleep.

At the social development stage, the child likes to play with others, yet unable to identify the appropriate time for it. Parents may guide the child to understand the appropriate time to play together with the younger brother.
